Using 12 Step Slogans to Stay Clean and Sober

When a person enters early recovery life seems overwhelming. The rooms of AA or other 12 Step programs will have certain items hanging on the wall to be seen by all who attend. The items consist of the 12 Steps of the Program, the 12 Traditions (principles of the 12 Step program) and a variety of short slogans.

These slogans have been passed along from one addict to another. They are simple truths that help each member stay clean and sober. These slogans at first reading may seem trite, but usually once utilized these pithy statements can be life saving reminders in difficult times.

Common 12 Step Slogans:

  • Time takes time
  • This too shall pass
  • One day at a time
  • Think, think, think
  • Easy does it
  • Act as if…
  • Change is a process not an event
  • FEAR: false evidence appearing real
  • Keep it simple
  • Just for today

When a newly recovering addict or an addict with time but who is in crisis turns to the slogans, it is because these short powerful statements can remind the addict of what right thinking in difficult times should look like. In crisis, our thoughts and actions are confused. When we suffer from negative thinking due to stress, we develop negative feelings. Negative feelings lead us to negative actions. These actions are generally high risk behaviors that will lead an addict to relapse.

The slogans are short, easy to remember, and incredibly powerful. These slogans actually help the addict avoid getting caught in the tangle of “stinking thinking” as it is called.
